Gareth Denman

Hi, my name is Gareth and I am one of the First Aid Trainers. A little bit about me, alongside First Aid Training, I also work as a HART Paramedic. HART stands for Hazardous Area Response Team; this means we respond to more difficult or dangerous 999 calls to provide patient care. Examples of this include Police/Hostile environments, Fire/Building collapses, Chemical/Dangerous products incidents to name a few. Doing the HART role requires a lot of additional specialised training with regular training updates and requalification’s. Prior to HART, I was a Paramedic on the road working in the Carmarthenshire area of South West Wales for a number of years. In total I have been in the Ambulance service for 10 years.

I am also the Director of Ambulance and Medical CPD Limited. This Company provides online learning and CPD (Continual Professional Development) for Paramedics and Ambulance Staff Worldwide. I create and manage a lot of the content alongside a few other Advanced Paramedic Practitioners. For my Paramedic Training I have completed a FdSc Paramedic Science Degree and a BSc (Hons) Advanced Professional Practice Degree.

When I have spare time, I enjoy spending it with my family. I really enjoy doing BBQ’s as soon as the weather starts getting sunnier, one of my special dishes is a slow smoked beef brisket. I also enjoy learning the guitar, something I started just over a year ago.

Alex Wright (FdSc, MC Paramedic)

I have been working in the Emergency Services now for around 20 years. My career started back in 2002 when I joined Avon Fire and Rescue Service as a firefighter, which was a very big achievement for me. After 3 years I transferred to Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, where I was fortunate enough to be put through their emergency fire driving course, as well as a first aid trauma course.

Although my passion was with the Fire Service at that time, I decided to change my career and join the Ambulance Service as an Emergency Care Assistant in 2008 at Bath Ambulance Station. I continued in this role until 2011, where I successfully enrolled onto the Open University Paramedic Science Degree. Finally, after 4 years of hard work I finally passed my degree as a Paramedic. This was a huge milestone for me as I had never achieved a degree before in education. My career then came on in leaps and bounds, by completing further modules in patient assessment and clinical reasoning at the University of the West of England.

As of 2019 I wanted to further my qualifications and joined the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). Which is a group of specialist Paramedics trained in a multitude of different tasks, ranging from rope, water and mountain rescue, right through to dealing with counter terrorism tasks with the Police. I am very proud in achieving this status in my career and have now been asked to attend our centre of excellence to training Paramedics from around the UK in HART capabilities.

As well as joining HART I am also a flight Paramedic, which allows me to fly around the world and repatriate people who have become unwell on holiday or business trips. This involved a course in dealing with aviation physiology, transport medicine, airborne critical care emergencies.

I am very pleased to be part of the Miskin Manor Training Academy, I am looking forward in delivering high quality first aid and training courses, which will offer a complete new and unique experience in courses run by our experienced health care and hospitality trainers.

Andy Newman

Having joined the then Wiltshire Ambulance Service in 1988, my desire for training was apparent through my own personal development starting as an Ambulance Technician and then achieving my Paramedic qualification in 1992. Throughout this period I would assist the Training faculty at the then Southern Ambulance Training College and achieved my teaching qualification in 1996. I was involved in the training and development of new Ambulance Technicians and helped implement the extended Paramedic training programme along with providing specialist training to external companies as well as the H&S First Aid Courses.

My career literally took off as I was fortunate to achieve a role within the local Air Ambulance Unit in 2004 along with starting my Paramedic Degree, achieving a BSc (Hons) in pre-hospital emergency care. Following on from my Paramedic Degree, I continued my University Education with achieving a PGCE along with taking a promotion as a Clinical Team Leader which required me to leave my Air Ambulance position in 2010.

In 2013, following a re-organisation within the Ambulance Service I re-entered the training faculty and am currently the Trust’s lead for Induction Courses, helping to develop the integration of Newly Qualified University Paramedics into autonomous clinical practice. Likewise, I have a responsibility for the training requirements of over 200 colleagues through annual development training days and operational front-line shifts.

During these exceptionally challenging times, running and my allotment have been my saviour, not only in the physical health sense but mentally as well.
